Marital satisfaction and health in late adulthood – a literature review

Abstract

Objectives

This article aims to analyze links between marital satisfaction and physical health, mental health, and well-being through a systematic review of the literature to understand better the structure and trajectory of the marital relationships of seniors and its impact on health and well-being.

Method

Articles from 1993 to 2024 were included in the review. The following electronic databases were used to search for articles: Google Scholar, Research Gate, and Pub Med. These searches were conducted using combinations of the following words: relationship, marital satisfaction, health, seniors, marriage, marital satisfaction, stress, diseases, and people in late adulthood. The search was conducted in Polish and English.

Results

The analysis revealed a relationship between marital satisfaction and physical health, mental health, and well-being in seniors. Unhappy marriages can cause stress and exacerbate diseases related to it.

Discussion

The marital quality of research participants is one of the elements that can increase or decrease stress levels and, therefore, affect the development of related diseases. Chronic stress, which can be a result of an unhappy marriage, impairs the health systems of an individual.
