Abstract

Exposure to the COVID-19 virus, which has become a global pandemic, challenges society, in general, and the older adult population in particular. This epidemic has had a significant impact on different aspects of daily life for older adults. Lockdown and social distancing regulations can lead to stress and conflicts between a family member and or a paid caregiver and this might cause elder abuse and neglect. This article aims at discussing the implications of the Covid-19 pandemic on vulnerable older adults in Israeli society. The first section will describe the phenomenon of elder abuse and neglect, followed by a theoretical framework for understanding the occurrence of elder abuse. Five case studies will be presented with emphasis on risk factors for abuse and neglect, and patterns of abusive relationships between care provider and care recipient. The type of elder abuse and neglect will be identified. The last part will summarize and conclude the article.
