Critical role of mentalization and positive orientation

Abstract

Health in late adulthood is gradually deteriorating (Kijak, Szarota, 2013; Błachnio, 2019). Therefore, there is a continuous search for factors that can perform protective functions against it. Recently, mentalization and positive orientation have attracted particular interest (Fonagy, 2008; Laguna, Oleś, Filipiuk, 2011; Sobol-Kwapińska, 2014; Bateman, Fonagy, 2016; Sobol-Kwapińska, 2014; Dimitrijević et al. 2018; Lukasik, Witek, 2018; Jańczak, 2021). There is a lack of research on the importance and level of these resources in the population of Polish seniors. The primary purpose of this study was to see if there is a relationship between positive orientation and mentalization in a group of seniors with atherosclerosis. Sixty-one people in late adulthood were surveyed (M= 69.41 SD=5.44). The MentalizationScale (MentS) (Dimitrijević et al. 2017) and the Positive Orientation Scale (P-Scale) (Caprara, 2012) were used for measurement. The results confirmed a significant positive relationship between the two constructs. People with a more positive perception of the world are also more likely to reflect on their functioning. Mentalization and positive orientation can be enhanced through appropriate psychoeducation and psychological support to support seniors’ mental, social, and physical functioning.
