Psychological aspects of positive ageing

Marta Kosiol

Abstract

A person can age in a normal way, pathologically, or successfully (optimally). The text pre- sents the perspective of changes that take place in the human personality in one’s old age, the influence with personality, on the formation of the personal attitude to time as well as the impor- tance of life experience for personality. The importance of active engagement in life is described using such factors of successful ageing as: physical and cognitive resources, social productiv- ity, interpersonal relationships, absence of disease and disability, positive spirituality. The factors listed by the John Rowe and Robert Kahn model of successful ageing create a framework for the discussion of active approach to ageing from a psychological perspective. A particular attitude as well as using the resources available in various areas of human functioning result in feelings of life satisfaction, fulfilment, and a belief that one’s life has sense and meaning, allowing for staying fit mentally and/or physically even in the late periods of life.
