The article presents the profile of Professor Halina Szwarc, the founder of the first University of the Third Age in Poland. Her life was closely associated with Łódź, Poznań, and Warsaw. During the war, she actively and selflessly participated in the underground resistance movement for the Union of Armed Struggle. Professor Halina Szwarc holistically perceived gerontology, believing it should address all aspects of human aging, including biological, psychological, and social dimensions. She can also be considered a pioneer of gerontological prophylaxis, as she believes that physical and mental activity and life satisfaction contribute to improving the body's fitness and functionality, slowing down the aging process, and enhancing adaptive abilities. She was honored with the highest military and civilian awards for her heroic efforts during World War II and her scientific and social contributions. She was filled with ideals, ready for the most extraordinary sacrifices. We owe the flourishing of the University of the Third Age in our country to Professor Halina Szwarc.
