A case study of social exclusion of older people living in care in- situations

Agnieszka Salon

Abstract

The paper discusses older people who live in nursing homes or receive daytime institutional care for personal, health-related, and financial reasons. It describes how they perceive their present situation, how they spend their time, what they think about their place, and what emotions and feelings they experience in daily lives. Subjects often claim to feel lonely, isolated, and disappointed in other people’s behavior towards them. They experience social exclusion and lack of understanding and patience on the part of others. The paper also aims to depict some of the differences between living in a nursing home and living in one’s home environment while receiving only daytime care.
