IMMIGRATION-SECURITY NEXUS AS A DRIVER IN THE AMERICAN PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN IN 2024
Abstrakt
Although the vast majority of public opinion regards the economy as a key issue in
the American presidential campaign in 2024, migration is just behind. Related to
many other aspects of public affairs such as the labor market situation, public spending,
identity, etc. is also strongly associated with security, especially the unauthorized
(illegal) ones. The paper aims to present the immigration-security nexus discourse
in the American presidential campaign analyzed through the Securitization
and Just Securitization theoretical framework proposed by the Copenhagen School
and the critical approach of Rita Floyd. Results show strong politicization and securitization
of immigration in the case of all three candidates as well as tightening
anti-immigration policies because of the growing migratory threat in the US even in
the case of previously more pro-immigrant candidates.
