Abstract

This article addresses issues in thanatology, focusing on the grief process from various theoretical perspectives. It critiques the concept of grief as a linear progression through several stages. In contrast, it discusses William Worden's more educationally effective concept of individualizing the grief process. Worden developed a model of tasks for individuals who have lost a loved one. The first task in this model is to confront and accept the inevitability of death. The second task involves expressing the emotions associated with losing a loved one. The subsequent tasks are more forward-looking, involving adaptation to life, learning new ways of functioning and finding ways to honor the memory of the deceased. The grief experience among older adults is an example of this concept. Educational areas emerge directly from the assumptions of the individualized grief pathway. In this process, developing a focus on change is crucial, as it helps the bereaved individual learn and adapt to their new life situation.
