Religion and religious communities in old peoples’ lives

Anna Sanecka

Abstract

Older people are the primary age group participating in religious life. The role of religion and religious communities in older people’s lives can be presented from three different perspectives: theological, psychological, and sociological. From a theological perspective, religion helps older people prepare for death and meet God in eternal life. Preparing for death is also important from the psychological point of view as it gives some hope and reduces the stress of the unknown. Religion helps older people feel more secure in the last period of their lives and fulfill other needs as well. From a sociological point of view, religious communities are more important than religion itself. Although the communities help the elder regarding medical care, social services, and some material needs, the most important thing for older people may be talking and having social bonds in their religious communities.
