Depressive disorders as comorbidities in old age

Abstract

In the older people population, a significant problem of multimorbidity is observed, including the co-occurrence of depressive disorders with other diseases/disorders. This phenomenon is a challenge for seniors themselves and their families, as well as for the healthcare and social assistance systems. Due to the existence of many etiological factors causing depression among seniors, it is a complex and complicated phenomenon. It is both a health problem (also in clinical terms) and a social problem. The specificity of depressive disorders results not only from the occurrence of characteristic symptoms but also from the intensity of various other ailments and a significant impact on all spheres of the senior's functioning. In the article, based on an analysis of the literature on the subject, the most important aspects, including symptoms and causes of the co-occurrence of depressive disorders in the elderly population and the problems accompanying it, are summarized.
