Abstract

This paper discusses the literature review and focuses on the phenomenon of suicides committed by people in late adulthood. The article aimed to describe the characteristic aging-related phenomena that may harm the mental well-being of older adults and increase the risk of suicide. The article also presented statistics on suicide among older adults in Poland and Europe. The final aim was to summarize the reports on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental well-being of older people and the probability of their suicide.

Among the factors contributing to the deterioration of the mental well-being of older adults and the factors which may increase the risk of suicide, changes occurring with age at the biological, psychological, and social levels, as well as mental disorders, with particular emphasis on depression and insufficient health care offered to people in late adulthood, were distinguished. The cited statistics showed that suicides among older adults are an increasingly noticeable phenomenon, and their scale depends, among others, on the degree of urbanization of their residence. Seniors were also particularly vulnerable to mental deterioration and suicide due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
