Abstract

Currently, one of the challenges for gerontologists is to highlight the determinants of healthy aging, that is, to identify the conditions that maintain and/or improve the quality of life in old age. The research sought to present meaning in life as an indicator of successful aging from the perspective of time perception and attitudes towards death, and the fact that subjective well-being plays a significant role in psychosocial adaptation. This report shows the invariability of the measurement of the Well-Being Index with selected distributions of variables. The following methods were used in the research: Purpose in Life Test (PLT), Death Anxiety and Fascination Scale, Time Perception Questionnaire (ZTPI), The Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS). The study included (N = 300) students of the Universities of the Third Age from 3 cities in Poznań, Tricity, Kraków, and people not participants of the University of the Third Age, including 178 women and 122 men aged over 60. The subjects completed the study in the form of paper and pencil. The findings provide evidence for the relationship between mental well-being and life attitudes among older adults. Measurements showed that this approach is very consistent and stable. The presented results show that the sense of meaning in life mediates the relationship between the perspectives of perception of time and attitude towards death and subjective well-being. The analysis of the results confirmed the hypothesis that mental well-being and life attitudes are positively correlated. There were no differences in life attitudes between the two groups.
