Abstract

Preparation for age-related changes, also known as preparation for old age, is an essential area of interest for various sciences. Gerontology (especially geragogy) and social policy (primarily senior policy) are leading in this study area. This interest results from the intensive pace of aging in modern societies and the need to urgently take appropriate practical actions, for example, in health care and social assistance. Preparation for old age has individual and social values. Unfortunately, most adults do not take action in this area. The article aimed to identify ways for individuals in mid-adulthood to prepare for age-related changes, discussed within the context of categories significant from the perspective of geragogy. At the same time, the analyses used the assumptions of the holistic model of health in the individual aspect. Therefore, it was established that in preparing people in the middle adult phase for age-related changes, the basis should be health, education, and self-care. Taking actions that fit into separate categories will undoubtedly make it easier to maintain or achieve independence and agency, which are extremely important in the lives of adults, regardless of what stage of adulthood they are in.
